Israel Programs and Advocacy

We have a strong commitment to deepening our personal and community connections to Israel. We try to fulfill this commitment by:

  • keeping our community up to date on developments impacting the State of Israel and how we can be involved in Israel Advocacy (including sending a delegation to the annual AIPAC policy conference) and
  • enhancing our Israel cultural awareness.
Rabbi Kelman

Rabbi Kelman

During this past year, we received a grant from Nefesh B’Nefesh and the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism through their Maalot program to enhance our congregation’s connection to contemporary cultural life in Israel, including literature, film and music.

As part of this grant, on December 9-10, 2011, we will host Rabbi Naamah Kelman, Dean of the Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem as our Scholar- in-Residence. Rabbi Kelman is a descendent of 10 generations of rabbis and the first woman to be ordained by the Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem in 1992.

Rabbi Kelman has been intensely involved in the emerging movement to bring Jewish spirituality to secular Israelis and has been a leader in inter-faith dialogue and the cause of Women’s rights in Israel. During our Shabbat together, Rabbi Kelman will lead services and incorporate the style of the Beth Tefila Yisraeli (the new Israeli House of Prayer): poetry, study, and lively singing.
