From Our President
Dear Friends:
July often means fireworks, barbeques, and warm weather. This July is different because these are challenging times - a phrase we have all said and thought repeatedly over the last four months.
Instead of focusing on the many challenges, I want to share my thoughts on a new common expression, silver linings. Rabbi Plumb, Toni, Yael and Jamie have led our community in the transition to our virtual world of programs, meetings and Shabbat services using Zoom. This change has truly been a true silver lining. Virtual gatherings have created opportunities for those who prefer not to drive, working people who don’t have time to commute, families with no childcare, and others who prefer just to check out what’s going on.
While not the same as our physical gatherings, there are many positive aspects of attending on Zoom. Besides the ease and comfort of showing up in workout clothes, we all sit in the “front row”. No one has to worry about where to sit, or wonder who may, or may not, talk to them. It is easy for new comers and individuals who haven’t attended in a long time to visit with us. Everyone’s name appears at the bottom of their “square”, so there is no embarrassment over forgetting a name or not recognizing a face. Each meeting feels personal as if we are invited into someone’s living room. In fact attendance at our services and programs often triples pre-COVID-19 rates.
As we plan our future, it is important that we sustain the “power of the square”. None of us is sure what Mishkan Tefila life will look like post COVID-19, but for now, please share your thoughts on how best to plan our High Holy Day services and other programs with me.
The square is a symbol of community. Let’s work, pray and celebrate together to strengthen our Mishkan Tefila community.
As I begin my term as your President, I wish you and your family good health.
