“Tea with the Team” is a highlight of our week and we have come to look forward to these 2 hours that we spend with our fellow Mishkan Tefila family. We have laughed, shared stories, shared recipes and at times cried, as we have navigated these crazy COVID 19 times together.
However, the power of “Tea with the Team” was never more important or powerful than this week, when we met together and like every other week, we had a wonderful and fun topic to discuss. We were planning to talk about what habits we have adopted as part of our “quarantine” experience. Well… we had planned that topic but what we experienced, was the gift that this dynamic and inspiring hour offers each week. We started with our usual few minutes of check in, but then someone asked a question about the struggle between “white skin privilege” and Judaism. A long way away from the light and fun topic of habits of quarantine! This question opened up a dynamic and engaging topic, that once again, reminded us that “Tea with the Team” is a sacred and special time.
As we talked about our life experiences and shared our stories, we heard the role that Race and Religion have played in our lives and the impact that prejudice and anti-Semitism has had. We began to wrestle with the idea of race and anti-Semitism and the Team shared stories about their experiences growing up surrounded by anti-Semitic experiences. Stories about losing jobs, not getting jobs and standing up to people who rejected us based on our religion, became the pivotal learning for our Team and we connected this to the powerful and necessary work that Racial Justice is asking us to explore. Our group shared stories of standing on the side of the road holding signs, leaving jobs because of anti-Semitism, changing resumes to get jobs based on fears of anti-Semitism, not getting into colleges because of quotas and so much more. A rich and eye-opening narrative shared amongst a group of friends. Our “Tea with the Team” people have stood up for Anti-Semitism and Racial Injustice sharing their inspiring stories with us every week.
As we look at this week’s Torah parasha, we learn about the importance of the Ten Commandments. In fact, the Shema is a part of the Eikev Parasha that we will read this weekend. Wearing Tefillin and putting a mezuzah on your doorpost are symbols of our Jewish faith and are outward expressions of the power of our Jewish community. The incredible “Tea with the Team” community reminds us of the power of learning and growing together. We have held one another, albeit virtually, and have learned so much with and from one another.
If you have not joined us for a ‘Tea with the Team”, we hope you will consider joining us. It is truly the highlight of our week.
Shabbat Shalom. Yael and Toni
