May I understand that the choice between complaint, indifference and gratitude is mine at every single moment of my life.
I collect motivational phrases and tape them to my desk above the keyboard. During these days of the COVID pandemic, my collection has grown significantly as has the number of times I stop keyboarding to reread and reflect on my daily favorite. Focusing on gratitude, hakarat ha’tov (Seeing the good) enables me to focus on thanking the individuals working in the grocery store rather than my fear of shopping in the store. I practice this same mental reframing in my role and my responsibilities as your President of Congregation Mishkan Tefila. While I miss the in-person interactions at leadership meetings, I redirect my energy away from complaints and now begin each zoom meeting with humor. At one meeting I asked participants to share cartoons, and at another viewed a humorous video together. Rather than waste time complaining or denying the impact of COVID-19 on our operations, our staff members, Toni and Yeal, completely revamped our programs and administrative operations. For that, we are all grateful. Recognizing our unique circumstances, Rabbi Plumb initiated Mussar Moments videos that are viewed online by a wide international audience. One viewer wrote me, “How does Rabbi Plumb manage to know my mood each day and find a way to turn my negativity to positive motivation? Thank you for your inspiring messages.
Looking ahead, the High Holy Day Task Force also has embraced the responsibility to reinvent our High Holy Day Services for an online format. Our services will incorporate the 3 fundamental concepts of Teshuvah, (return), Tefila (prayer), and Tzedakah (acts of charity). We will share more plan details in the coming days.
It is my wish and prayer that each of us, alone and together as a community, continue to understand our power of choice and choose to embrace gratitude.
Shabbat Shalom, Caryl
