From Our Rabbi: A Teaching
Last week, we read the story of Noah’s ark. The ark was a pretty tight space, but as simple as it was, it was strong and sturdy. The ark protected the human beings and animals from the unsteady, rocky waters that filled the land. In the USA, we are living in rocky, uncertain times. We don’t have an ark, per se, but we do have something else that is strong and sturdy. Democracy. The ideal set out in our Constitution which starts with ‘We the People’. Our ability to vote, to choose our governing rulers, remains the strongest metaphoric ark we have. The voting booth may be a small simple space, but it is our protection against the floods of injustice, despotism and powerlessness. As Jews, we are told not to wait for the Messiah to bring about change. We are to actively create the world of righteousness and compassion that we, and God, desires.
So…please vote. Early voting is still open in Massachusetts. Ballot boxes and the town halls are open and safe. Their covid protections are good and in place. If you need help posting your ballot, please call the synagogue office at 617-332-7770. Call your friends and encourage them to vote.
