From Our Rabbi
Welcome Malka Engel
Friends,
I am writing to update you on recent developments in the Silverlining Buddy program.
As you may remember, the impetus for Congregation Mishkan Tefila’s Silverlining Buddies program was a crisis response to the social isolation that older adults experienced during the first days and months of COVID when we were in lockdown mode.
The premise was actually quite simple…connect high school and college students, by telephone, for meaningful intergenerational connections. Our young volunteers benefited by being able to get involved and give back to their communities. The young adults learned the skills needed to patiently develop relationships via talking on the telephone rather than communicating digitally. Our older adults were able to guide volunteers and share memories, interests and wisdom. We supported the young adults through bi- weekly supervision sessions.
We were impressed by the depth of some of the relationships that were developed and the benefit that young and older volunteers gained from being involved in Silverlining Buddies.
Fast forward a year and a half after the beginning of COVID and our experience has taught us that COVID, or no COVID, there are intangible benefits to promoting meaningful connections between older and younger people.
To that end, we are excited to welcome Malka Engel to the Silverlining Buddies Team. Malka graduated from Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University in NYC with a degree in Psychology. She has held a number of positions as project manager in non-profit organizations such as Jewish Vocational Services, Yachad and Jewish Family & Children’s Services. Malka serves on the board of Ma’ayan, a Boston based Jewish learning initiative and is an active volunteer in her community. She came to Silverlining Buddies as the parent of a high school volunteer.
Malka will coordinate all aspects of the program and will take over from Wendy Handler, who will remain on board in an advisory capacity. Malka can be reached at Malka@mishkantefila.org on on her cell at (917) 301-1553.
We are grateful to Wendy for ensuring the Silver Linings Buddy Project is one of quality, consistency, and a credit to Congregation Mishkan Tefila. We thank her for her continued support of the program.
Please feel free to reach out if you would like a Buddy or if you would like to be a Buddy! Malka will be in touch with you as we continue our important work. We welcome your participation and involvement!
Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Marcia Plumb
