A Teaching From Our Rabbi
Every year, Shabbat Shekalim, this Shabbat, is designated as Refugee Shabbat by HIAS. It is tragic that Refugee Shabbat comes as we watch so many innocent Ukrainians flee their beloved homes for safety in neighboring countries. The eyes of the world are on Russia and Ukraine, as we hold our breath for fear of this war spreading; in compassion for those forced to fight, on both sides, led by an evil man who kills others for his own aggrandizement. Before our eyes, we are witnessing a battle for democracy, freedom of speech, and human dignity.
We feel powerless, shaken, and full of despair that this outrageous attack comes just as the world is struggling to recover from the trauma of Covid.
But then I think of my friends, Rabbi Tanya Sakhnovich and Rabbi Alexander Dukhovny, from the Ukraine, who are experiencing the war first hand, but have not lost their faith in humanity or the future.
Please join me tonight, in person and on zoom, and tomorrow morning, on zoom only, as we pray for Ukraine, for all refugees forced to flee in fear, and for peace
