A Teaching From Our Rabbi
As many of you know, I am from Texas. My uncle had a cattle ranch outside of Houston. He used to take my brother and me to check the chain fences around the property. He would shake the fence, and somehow, he could always tell if there was a weak link that needed repair. Every link in the fence mattered, because one link is dependent on the next, and the next. Each one builds upon the others. The links at the top of the fence are built, ultimately, upon the ones at the bottom, the ones that came before the others.
During this last week of the Omer, we have been focussing on the trait of Malchut, Majesty, nobility and leadership. This same week, in our ¾ British household, we are celebrating the longest serving human monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. One aspect of her noble character, despite her mistakes, is her loyalty and dedication to her country and people. We celebrate her reign, in part, because she holds the memories of a nation. She knows intimately what and who came before. Yesterday, on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, she made sure we know who is to come after her.
We Jews often say that we are links in an eternal chain fence, the present built upon the past, holding up the future. Every Jew matters, every Jew holds up the others. This weekend, at Shavuot, we will celebrate the past, present and future of Judaism. We remember who stood at Sinai, and those whom we have loved and lost, during Yizkor. This Sunday and Monday we will accept the Ten Commandments, again, in our day. We hope our loyalty and dedication to our people will lead to a strong Jewish community in the future, and the Sinai brit (covenant) will be renewed generation after generation.
On Shabbat morning, we celebrate l’dor v'dor, with the aufruf of Eric, and his soon to be bride, Danielle, the son and future daughter-in-law of Lynda and Fred Gordon. They bring their son to be blessed before the ark, as they were. We hope and pray that Eric and Danielle will one day bring their children to the same ark to be blessed.
This Shabbat, I hope you will be filled with pride at being a link in the chain of our people, and that your home and Jewish life will be symbols of the continuity of Judaism. May our noble characters be an example to others.
