Come With Me to Explore The Israel of Today (details below!)
Read the thoughts below, then click on the link at the end to find out about a CMT trip to Israel!!
In this weeks parasha, Shoftim, Moses lays down laws of justice that must be followed once the Israelites cross over into the Promised Land. Tzedek tzedek tirdof is one of the most famous: justice justice you shall pursue.
There are laws about judges who should be fair and impartial; punishments for those who break the laws; and the holy ways that the king who may rule over them must behave.
The Torah implies that The Promised Land will be a perfect messianic place with overflowing fruit, rivers of milk and honey, etc. So why does Moses feel the need to point out the things that might go wrong there?
He and God know that the place may be beautiful but people are often not. A place is affected by the people who dwell there. No matter where they live, whether in the desert, or Zion, humanity will be imperfect.
People will not always be just, or merciful. The Israelites will want to be like other nations, and want a king, which could have negative effects on the community if the leader does not practice justice.
The modern b'nai yisrael, Israelis, continue these same struggles. Israel is caught between wanting to be a holy people practicing tzedek, and a nation state like other nations, with a Parliament and prime minister.
This summer, at Shalom Hartman Institute, Michael and I studied the evolution of the land of Israel, from the Zion of the Tanakh, through 1948 until today. Our homeland has changed radically in just the 74 years of its existence. We at Mishkan have wanted to go together to deeply explore this beautiful and ever changing state.
So…join me to celebrate Israel's 75 birthday this spring.
CJP is partnering with the Shalom Hartman Institute to lead a Boston wide trip to Israel over Yom Ha'atzmaut.
CMT has been invited to bring a cohort, led by me, to join the tour. CLICK THIS LINK TO FIND OUT MORE. CLICK THIS LINK TO EXPRESS INTEREST IN COMING. This will not obligate you but it gives us an idea of interest.
