A Teaching from our Rabbi
Join me to put our Lights Out this year. I encourage you to put your hanukiyot in your front windows at Hanukkah, so their lights shine outwards, toward the street, to your neighbors.
In this time of unfounded hatred of Jews, let us show the beauty of our traditions. Let our pride and love for our ancient eternal faith and people shine out for all to see. We know how beautiful our lit hanukiyot (menorahs) are. This year, share the beauty with our neighbors.
In the Talmud, Rabbis Hillel and Shammai disagreed about how to light the Hanukiyah. Shammai said, Light all the candles the first night, and decrease them each night. Hillel said the opposite: Start with one and build up to a full Hanukiyah at the end of the festival. He thought we should increase light during Hanukkah. And so do we.
Let our festival of Hanukkah add light to the world, and help alleviate the darkness, both physical and metaphorical, all around us.
Hanukkah’s origin is based in fighting antisemitism from the Greeks. The Maccabees fought with guerilla warfare. We fight it by being visible, proud, and sharing the gifts of our Judaism.
So, put your Lights Out.
I also ask you for one more thing – a Hanukkah present.
Give Mishkan Tefila a gift this Hanukkah. Help us reach our year end goal of $8,000 over the 8 nights.
Every day of Hanukkah, we will send you a special greeting as our gift to you. I will send you this email gift because I care about you. You matter. I will continue to believe that, whether you make a donation to Mishkan or not. But I hope you will help Mishkan Tefila continue to be there for you when you need us, or want to pray or just have fun.
Please, if you can, give us a year-end Hanukah gift. Give what you can, then give a little bit more.
