A Word of Torah from Rabbi Starr
Rabbi David Starr returning from The March for Israel, Tuesday, November 14, 2023
"So much has been destroyed. I have to cast my lot with those, who, age after age, Perversely, with no extraordinary Power, reconstitute the world." - Adrienne Rich
As we think about the tragedy of October 7, and the extraordinary march of last week, this poem of Adrienne Rich comes to mind. It feels so Jewish: history tells the story of triumph but also of a lot of tragedy and destruction. Hardship that literally seems to land on our heads, over which we have no control. The only power we possess consists of how we respond to our troubles.
We cast our lots - we choose - who to live with, to work with - to decide what we should do next. We’re not special, we’re not famous or powerful, we’re just regular people armed with the power to endure, to continue. To rebuild the world one brick at a time, one day at a time. That feels so Jewish.
We live a moment at a time, an action at a time, a mitzvah at a time. The struggle to make the world a little bit better, a little bit kinder, a little bit more just, begins with us. Because each of us is a world.
Why community? Why our people? Because we all need love and comfort and companionship, and because we together can rebuild better than we can alone.
Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi David Starr
From the Front Lines with Michael Oren Saturday, November 18, 12:30 pm
In partnership with the Friends of United Hatzalah, we are pleased to welcome Michael Oren, who will be providing an update on the ongoing Israel-Hamas war and a Q&A immediately following kiddush this Saturday, November 18.
Michael B. Oren served as Israel's ambassador to the United States from 2009 to 2013. As Ambassador, he was instrumental in securing U.S. support for Israel’s defense and upholding Israel’s right to security and peace. The Forward named Ambassador Oren one of the five most influential Jews in America and the Jerusalem Post listed him as one of the ten most influential Jews worldwide. You can read his full biography here.
This event will be streamed online via Zoom, but not recorded. This event will follow Kiddush.
Daily Mishna Learning with Rabbi David Starr Monday - Friday, 12:00PM
When COVID began Rabbi David Starr started an online daily Mishna learning with KI. This has been a great way to connect and learn together.
We invite everyone in our community for daily Mishna learning and open dialogue on Zoom. The sessions meet at 12:00PM, for 15 – 20 minutes Monday through Friday.
Participant led Mincha will follow each learning at 12:20PM.
We are happy to announce that due to our community's generosity we have doubled our goal and raised over $20,000 and will be sending over $30,000 to JNF.
We are looking to keep this momentum going through Thanksgiving. With your support we can continue to raise funds and provide the support Israel deserves and so desperately needs thru JNF.
Thank you for considering a donation to this very worthy cause. Please reach out to Toni with any questions.
